What can I take to Ellis Island?

I have heard you can only take "small" handbags on the boat to Ellus Island and the Statue of Liberty. Also no umbrellas, camera cases.

What is "small"? Does anyone have any idea of dimensions?

They also say there are no lockers to store larger stuff while you are on the boat. Strange!

Can anyone help please?

  • Didnt go with the Mrs as I was working that day but I know she had her travel handbag with her which is a very large satchel type bag - probably almost 2'x2' though only a few inches thick.

Cannot comment on what she had in the bag but normally its everything including the kitchen sink and she didnt complain about having any problems with the security checks etc. She doesnt like planning so wouldnt have read up on what you can/ cant take before going to know to take things out the bag

We were there in July and weren't made aware of any unusual restrictions. I had a backpack with camera, water etc. We did have to queue up and have bags checked but that's pretty standard these days.

As far as storage goes, it's a very short boat trip of a few minutes. You should be fine to carry whatever you need.

Incidentally we thought it was a terrific museum, very moving and well put together. Be ready for queues getting on boats at both ends!

And don't knock your sunglasses into the water like I did when I got off the boat

FWIW here's the page on the National Park Service web site which lists the prohibited items, but it doesn't define what is meant by "large":

I had my usual back pack when I went in April. No problems at all.
