Face primer - any good dupes, tips?

Options
Hi all,

I've nearly run out of my usual primer and reading some of the dupes threads on here has got me thinking of trying something new (and saving some cash!)

I normally use Laura Mercier's oil free primer which is my fave as I like the consistency. I've tried a No7 one but I hated the texture, it felt chalky and weird! I also had the same problem with Benefits pore minimiser.

I was thinking of trying the W7 one which I believe is a dupe of Smashbox (which in turn is just Lanacane)? Now, my question is, will I get on ok with the texture or is it that funny chalky type??

If it is a no-go, any suggestions on a good (and preferably cheap) alternative? I have oily-combination skin if that's any help. There are so many different types on ebay I can't face researching them all :(

Thanks in advance :)

I've just bought the Lanacane gel this weekend after reading about it on here. It's not chalky at all, it's completely clear on the skin and leaves a velvety finish.

Milk of magnesia is another cheap alternative to expensive primers. It works a treat but it is the chalky type so it won't suit you. It can be drying if you use it too much as well.

Ooh, thanks Starry, good to hear from someone who's used it.

I was in Boots last night having a look and every brand now has their own primer, it's all so confusing!

I will deffo give the Lanacane a go first, fingers crossed I get on ok with it :)

I use the Lanacane gel too. Other primers bring me out in spots but the Lanacane gel doesn't.

The Max Factor Stay All Day Primer has some great reviews (especially for those of us with oily skin). It's next on my list to try onece my sample of the porfessional has run out.

    Thanks guys.

I looked at the Max Factor one last night and it's a similar consistency to Laura Mercier. Should Lanacane not work out, I'll try and get a sample of that to try...

I knew you lovely lot would be able to help :)

IS the Laura Mercier one a gel or cream consistency? I have oily skin too and was thinking about trying the Laura Mercier one.

I use the oil free one and it's more of a cream. Feels lovely on and definitely helps! Can't speak for the non-oil free ones though as I've not tried them :)

Thanks roobee, I think I'll try it out. A lot of money if it doesn't suit me though!

No probs :). Will you be ordering it online or going in a store? If in a store I'd deffo ask at the counter for a sample first. Failing that, ebay usually has smaller sized ones a bit cheaper than the shops!

I will have to order online, as I don't have a department store near me.
Good thinking about eBay, I think I'll have a look on there and see if I can get a sample sized one. Thanks :)
