Should I risk trying to get to work/using petrol because of flooding?

Bit of a tenuous link to being a DFW but it is about avoiding spending money so here goes...
I work in Gloucester. Can get there but only via a very convoluted and much longer than normal route because of the flooding.
Sons nursery is on my normal route to Glos, and there have been reports that it's not accessible from my direction. If it is however, I will need to drive the 15 miles there, then back home to get onto the alternative route to work. Will be an hour and three quarter journey of 75 miles (normally 21 miles in 45 mins) that needs repeating at the end of the day. I am also worried that because of the changing situation re: flooding, if I get to work I may not be able to get back to the nursery at the end of the day. (plus I'd have to leave at about 4 o'clock)
Although my boss might be a little annoyed at yet another member of staff not being able to get to work, he's fine with the principle of the floods disrupting everyone's lives for a few days. (he can't not be really)
Should I risk the journey and spend the money on petrol (normally costs me £6.50 a day, today would cost me about £20) or stay at home?
Oooh a moral dilemma- one that I'd be grateful of your opinion on!

I would stay home today - it sounds like you could get to work but you're not sure if you could get your son to nursery & even if you can you'd be later in to work & have to leave early so you've got time to drop him off & collect him.
I'd phone in and say that you can get to work, but you can't get your son to nursery, perhaps offer to do some work from home if that's possible (don't know what you do, but could anything be emailed to you?) and just enjoy your day at home with your DSTotal Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

Stay at home .....its a risk too far and I am sure if you explain re: your sons nursery your boss should take that on board and be understanding...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

i'd stay at home unless you had a really essential journey.
Never 'risk' a journey, you say yourself you might not be able to get back from the nursery.
It's more about you and your son's health than anything else.
Stay here - much more fun

I'd have to agree with everyone else. Surely your boss understands that some people just aren't going to make it in over the next few days.
If it were me, I'd be concerned about not being able to get my children from nursery at the end of the day.

Thanks all for your advice, I am taking it and so ds and I are about to go and gawp at the floods (from a safe distance!)
I love unexpected days off like this, even better it's pay day and I have had an unexpected bonus in my pay packet. Instead of frittering it on useless gubbins like I normally would, I am really quite excited at being able to pay off a bit more of the Big D! (er that's debt, soz)
Hooray for DFW'ing!0 -
Hiya
Glad you decided to take the day off. It's just not worth the hassle if the flooding got worse. Hope you enjoy your day xxJanuary budget

I think advice is not to travel, if peoplet get stuck on roads they caus more trouble for the emergency services and vital supplies getting through. So I guess that makes it a good citizen move staying at home rather than a DFW one!0

Just to say I totally agree - they don't need to rescue more people and they aren't sure if there will be more flooding are they? Could be a very stressfull and potentially expensive day if you got stuck. Look after yourselves and keep yourselves safe and pick up some more DF tips and ideas
