Computer can't check for Windows Updates.

I haven't had any Windows updates automatically downloaded and installed for quite some time so decide to check for any via 'any programmes' and Windows Updates. However I keep getting a message saying something like 'Could not check for Updates' and an error number of 800705B4. I have tried Troubleshooting and it said errors were 'fixed' but when I tried to update again I got the same error message.
I know very little about computers so I'm afraid will need step by step instruction from anyone who tries to help me. Thank you.

A quick google says it may be a problem when uninstalling Norton/McAffee.
Have you had either of these installed previously?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

If you receive Windows Update error 800705B4, 80070008, or 8007000e while checking for updates, it might be caused by a high number of update requests on the Windows Update servers. Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Update to run at its next scheduled time.

Thanks for the google link. Will get my husband to try some of those error fixes tomorrow.
I don't think the problem is high number of update requests as we have tried the same process on the laptop just after the desktop coming up with the error and it works fine on the laptop.
It's Windows 7 we're using.0 -
My Windows 7 laptop refused to automatically download updates, until I installed service pack 1.
Ironically, it didn't prompt me, or automatically download the service pack, because I needed the pack installed to use this function
Once I had manually installed SP1 from Microsoft's website, everything was peachy againBeware rogues, scoundrels and cowboys. We will hunt you down, then expose and eradicate you from our daily lives.

Do you have MS Office or other products on an expired corporate license? We do and Office works ok but we can't update. We still get notified for updates that then fail every time. The other updates will download ok0
