I know this isnt a new idea making electricity out of home gas boiler, I do recall this being mentioned on BBC working lunch around 10 years ago edit 14 years ago

  • Scroll Compressors have been around for decades. The clever bit is if you run them backwards and instead of compressing gas they expand it which in turn spins a generator. I like the idea.

I have been waiting for this damned thing to come down in price for years. Now it's FREE? There has gotta be a catch.

I would really like one that can be self-sufficient in running the central heating system, like the pump etc. , in the event of a power cut. If it can run some lights and the freezer, even better.
  • What would worry me is the fact that they have been putting off the launch for years. Plus IIRc the 'catch' is that you have to be with Flow for G&E for a minimum 5 years?
  • How is this any different to a micro CHP boiler?

Not going to happen in the UK. Grid connected generators have to disconnect themselves in the event they lose power from the grid.

I'm interested to know how the average household is going to save £500 p.a on their energy bills.

Most will still be using the same amount of gas and the average electricity consumption is around 3500kwh/year at 13p/kwh = £455 so you'd have to generate more than you use.

Flow will be taking your FIT payments so you wont benefit from them and they want about £50 a month = £600p.a which they reckon they are going to deduct from your bill, so if you don't use £600 worth I assume they'd want you to stump up the other £150. They also want it for 5 years so that's £3000 for a boiler

Does it generate when it's not actually producing hot water, if so you'll be feeding it with gas to produce electricity so the efficiency wouldn't everso good and your gas bill would increase. If it doesn't then you'll still be using leccy off the grid when it's not running

I'd like to see how they do the calculations to prove that this is a good idea.

  • This is just a micro chp, which you can claim fit for. So just like rent a roof for solar panels this company is doing the same for this.

Expect to be a in a contract where you have to be running the boiler for a min amount of hours, as that will guarantee their roi.
