Overgrown clematis!
We have not pruned our clematis Montana for some time and now we are painting and need to clear the space. I know this is not the right time to prune it, but being still mild, does anybody know if it would be too damaging to prune it now? It is a mass of dry tangled stems underneath. Many thanks!

Depends if you want flowers next year or not - if you do you need to wait until just after flowering and then prune as hard as you want - it will regrow (probably stronger).
If you cut it down now, you won't get any flowers next year but it should recover OK for the following year and will be fine afterwards.0
