My partner and I are planning a West Coast USA fly drive towards the end of 2016 - Sept/Oct time. Death Valley itself is worth a full day of exploration, perhaps with a motel stop in Lone Pine.

Agreed, and adding an overnight stop will also give you more time for the points of interest on the Tioga Pass Road such as Tuolumne Meadows, Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point.
