hotel recommendation in Central/East Berlin

i am going with a friend to Berlin for 4 nights next June and would prefer to stay within easy walking distance of the Brandenburger Tor/Potsdamer Platz/Unter den Linden. I have been before but my previous hotel has now closed. Any reasonably priced recommendations? I have just been browsing the IBIS chain which looks ok but wonder if there were any family hotels which you might know.

thanks

  • Not sure if your budget, but the radisson blu is great. Even if you don't stay there pop in to see the huge aquarium in the lobby!

It's not really necessary to be within walking distance, as the public transport system is excellent.

I've stayed at the TRYP by Wyndham, on Ruschestraße, and it's very good.

It's interesting, in that it used to be a "honey trap" hotel, operated by the Stasi.

Turn right from the hotel, and a ~ 5 min walk takes you to Magdalena Platz.

Hop a tram there, and it's just a handful of stops to Potsdamer Platz, which is a ~ 5 min (1Km) walk from the Brandenburger Tor.

While you are there, check out the Reichstag, just a couple of minutes walk from the Brandenburger Tor.

Also, you can have your photo taken, at a fake Checkpoint Charlie, on Friedrichstraße.

Of course, you really should spend an evening there.

It's a truly beautiful City, by night.

Also worth a visit (obviously during the day), is the Zoo Garten, on Hardenbergplatz.

Just around the corner from Ka de We. Ideal spot for public transport, shopping, restaurants etc.

Didn't book as far in advance as you but got a good price at the time.

Ibis is fine though. Basic but clean and generally a decent breakfast. I've stayed in them all over France.

I just got back from Berlin and have never stayed in the centre,as theres so much to see around the outside and transport is so great that within minutes you be somewhere. This time I stayed in the old british section Spandal we were across road from S bahn and got to stay in a 4 star hotel so much cheaper and a 10 min walk from shopping area.

We stayed in the Wyndam Berlin Excelsior on Hardenbergplatz near the zoo in May and it was pretty good for transport links. Hotel was very good quality, rooms were a nice size and the price was very cheap.

    Love this place..
  • Going a little OT, but still relevant.

There are a couple of interesting ways to sightsee Berlin.

One is on a double decker bus tour.

The other is on a Trabi Safari.

We stayed at the Hilton in Berlin, special rate as family member works for them.
As this is MSE I recommend going to the tourist office by the Brandenburg Gate and asking about the tickets for that days shows, we went to 4 in 5 days, great seats usually under 1/2 price.
