Extension over a communal garage

Hi guys, hopefully someone can help and share a little bit of advice.
We are in much need of some extra room for the family and were looking at whether we could potentially extend our home.
We have a semi detached house with a garage joined onto one side. The only thing is this garage is joined to our neighbours garage, which in turn is joined to two more garages, then houses continue from there.
Was just wondering if anyone has built on a garage which is joined to another?
Thanks

Is it just your garage you want to build over and not all four?0

Yea just our garage. It's just the fact that the four garages are joined together in a line, and ours is joined to the side of our house0

Yeah my dads house is like that, a semi and the garage joins next doors on the other side. His is extended over the garage as are several others.0

That's great to know, thank you.
Next step will be speaking to council and seeing an artitect.0 -
Your local council will have a list of architects.0

I will certainly ask them thanks.
Ideally we would want someone to come round and look at the property and tell us what we could potentially do in terms of extending above the garage, think I'll query this with the council and get some advice.
Just didn't want to waste money on artitects/builders/surveyors if the council turn round and just say no you can't extend.0 -
I recently refurbished a block of three garages (single skin) into a garden office with a new roof (GRP) and a cavity wall. I was obliged to ensure the footings were adequate.
I suspect you might need to consider this when extending over your garage."I think I spent 72.75% of my life last year in the office. I need a new job!!"0 -
You might want to talk to your neighbours as well...(if you know them a little already, it may be cheaper for them to do extension at the same time for example)0

Im assuming at most there is one other house at the end of the row joined to the garages. The others will be remote from their houses.0 -
I suspect that you will find that garage foundations will probably not be suitable to take the weight of a house extension. An investigation of the existing foundations should be your first priority.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
