Advice please on changing email

I'd be grateful for views/experiences on changing from BTinternet to another email and ISP. Have been on BT for years but it seems expensive and their recent change to BT mail from BT Yahoo is the last straw - now slow and glitchy and filled with junk mail from "partners" and others. If possible I would like to keep email addresses as they are, but I gather BT now charge for this. I've tried a search of the forum but maybe I have the wrong keywords - haven't found much. All advice would be appreciated.

If you keep the same email addresses, you'll still receive the same junk mail. Better to dump them and pay for your own domain so you can then have as many email accounts and email forwarders as you like.

There's no point in changing to another ISP's email service. As soon as you want to change ISPs again, you'll have to get a new email address (or pay a premium to keep the existing one).

Set up a free email account with a decent provider like GMX. That way you can move between ISPs and keep your email address.

For even better resilience (if you want to be able to change email providers without losing your email address), register a domain name. I think I pay £3 a year for a .co.uk domain. That way you can have me@mydomain.co.uk and use whatever free email host (and whatever ISP) you like... whilst keeping the same email address.

1and1.co.uk are doing .co.uk domains for 99p+VAT for the first year.
• Thank you, this is helpful. I have some finding-out to do.
• Or just use Google Mail or Microsoft Outlook.com for free mail independent of your ISP.

Google mail will certainly also pull in legacy emails from btinternet for as long as you are a subscriber.

Getting your own seems the best idea to me.

I used an old 'tiscali' email address for years after I'd stopped paying for their service and they suddenly cancelled it a few months ago. My fault entirely though for not changing.

I also have have gmail and other addresses but those have been known to screw up for various reasons.

I'm seriously considering my own domain name though in case I switch from plusnet.

I mix the lot I own loads of domains but point them all at an outlook.com address and then link this to outlook on my computer where I can send email as anyone I like.

Outlook.com deal with the spam in the main.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
• Thank you all for your replies, it is so useful to have some well-informed pointers.
• Gmail is the best one to go for IMHO. Excellent spam filter built in too.
