Samsung NC10 BSOD - HDD Replacement

Hi All,

I have a Samsung NC10 which regularly displays the blue screen of death (bsod) and I have been told that this will be due to a failure of the hard drive.

My question is, can this be replaced easily? and if so how? would this solve the bsod problems? and what would I need to do?

I am very happy playing with technical equipment, however I am no expert, so don't understand all the technical jargon that I have read on this subject via google :o so please be gentle :p

Many thanks to anyone who reads this and can help :T
LP

PS We have another PC to use, I would just be resurrecting this one for the kids to use.
My question may be simple...but please don't assume that I am

Before changing the HDD have you tried re-installing everything from scratch? Have you tried running Chkdsk?

Changing the HDD is pretty easy, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB9D5aTgOgw

bsod is not exclusively the sign of a failing hard drive.
In fact, it's more likely to be something else.
Any error codes would help to determine the source of the bsod.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Have you copied your important data elsewhere? So if you need to wipe the drive clean, you won't lose anything.
Easy to change the HDD if necessary.

Do you have the latest BIOS version? It should be version 11CA

If not, you will find it at the bottom of this page, along with instructions(supplied by clicking on the question mark alongside. I would suggest that you run it as Administratorrun it as Administrator after choosing to save it.

To confirm if the drive is faulty you can download free HDD diagnostic tools from most manufacturers site but one of the easiest is Seatools. The BIOS update would normally fix quite a lot of problems but few blue screens. You could also try pressing the f8 button as you turn it on and then choosing either "last known good configuration" or Safe Mode (this option may look different but will help backup any data it it boots in).
  • I recently resurrected a 7 year old Samsung laptop that was frequently bluescreen-ing with Windows 7(originally came with Vista but I upgraded to 7). I installed Linux Mint (free open source operating system) - it was so easy to do and now the laptop works perfectly and it never crashes as the software doesn't use as much power/resources as Windows did. :)

Before you do ANYTHING else - BACK UP! If your hard drive is indeed failing - and as above, that's absolutely not clear, the next time it actually boots could be the last time.
If you're techy minded, the fastest thing might be simply to re-install Windows. If it blue screens after that, start looking for things.
  • Thanks to all who have replied

The netbook died about 2 years ago and hasn't been touched since... I managed to get most of the data from it and I remember running Chkdsk, I can't remember the error codes but seem to remember that it mentioned the hard drive, can anyone run me through the best way of checking it again before I pay out for a new HDD?

Have you checked as to which BIOS version you have?
