seat altea v skoda octavia
Unfortunately my MPV is no longer as it is now very much a crumpled mess after being hit by a land rover this morning:eek:   It will be written off as there is no way it can be repaired, fortunately apart from bruising and shock the family are ok. We off course now need to replace my car and don't want/need a MPV anymore although we have had 2 and really like them but economically a family car would suit us fine as we only have 2 kids. And this is the second MPV we have had written off! Last time it was my fault:eek:  so really don't want a hat trick. We have narrowed the search down to the seat altea which I really like as it is quite compact however our son(10) is likely to grow to about 6ft and the plan would be to keep this car for at least 5 years (thats what we have said before!!) so not sure he would be comfortable in a couple of years. We also need to consider whether or not our daughters special needs buggy(also written off) plus other bits will fit in the boot and possibly a wheelchair in the next year when she outgrows the buggy. My husband thinks the octavia might be more suitable (he has always wanted one!) and I now think he might be right on this occassion. He already drives a seat ibiza and is really happy with it but it has a very small boot. We are looking to buy diesel. Any suggestions.

I would got with the octavia out of the 2. Im not sure about the skoda diesels but I havnt heard any bad reports on them.
The Altea seems to be slighty more expensive accross the range compared to the Octavia, they seem to use the same engines in both cars so are easy to compare, the same fault witht hem on both that the timeing belt tensioner is made of plastic and requires replaceing every 4 years or 60000 miles. but they do break.
But the Altea does look reasonably nice0 -
I have had a diesel Altea for 2 years next week, I can safely say it's the best car I have had in a lot of ways (and I have had Audis, Beemers etc before).
I do a lot of miles, it's economical, it's comfy, never had backache after a long run, seats five large adults in comfort. I had a 6 foot 3 customer sitting in the back of mine last week and he was amazed at how roomy it was, both head room and leg room.
It's also been ultra reliable, I've had the AA out just once to sort out an engine management issue, apparantly it was a known fault and the main dealer fixed it the same day.
I have the 2.0 DSG Sport, it's automatic with all the gadgets so it's quick off the mark but I have driven other models like the petrol 1600 when mine has been in for a service and they have always been reasonably powerful and comfortable.
As Little John says the Skoda is the same engine, my advice is take a test drive in both perhaps on the same day if you can arrange it, and see which you prefer.0 -

I have a Octy 2.0TDi Elegance and it has been a great car over the last 3 years. Really economical has a massive boot can get two prams in there, and there is loads of rear leg room I'm 6Ft 1" and can have my drivers seat in the correct position for me nearly all the way back and then I can still sit very comfortably in the rear without my knees being in the back of the drivers seat.
Done 50K miles never had any problems with it it's on variable servicing so only had two services since new. Still has original wiper blades and brake pads on it, and has used just 4 tyres.
Great car IMHO if you can get over the Skoda badge, it's basically a Moneysavers VW
And the reason I say it has been a great Car is that I have just traded it in........ for yes another Octy but this time the 2.0 200BHP Petrol vRS
which is due to be delivered in September. This is the first time in over 20 years of motoring I have had the same car twice on the run. Normally I even switch manufacturers.Cheers

Hi rev,
You should get more help with this on the Motoring board so I've moved your thread over there.

From what I can gather, they are both based on the Volkswagen Golf chassis, so it’s really up to you to decide which car you prefer. You might find it useful to look up their reviews on www.whatcar.co.uk0
