There seems to be 2 electricity suppliers to the flat we moved in, what should we do?

Options
I would really appreciate your advices on this matter.
When we moved in, one supplier suddenly created an electricity account under my name with wrong meter serial number and reading without my approval claiming they were supplying the flat before. I have made complaint at that time about these, wrong meter number and reading. Now they sent an estimated autumn bill, totally exaggerated with wrong meter number and reading and it says I gave the reading which is totally untrue.

The other one was sending payment letters for previous months than we moved in and that was sorted by the landlord and we continued contact with them giving correct readings, etc. because they have the correct meter serial number.

On the National Data Base the second one comes up with the flat's meter serial number. The address was slightly wrong and it was updated on the National Data base by the second supplier.

Who am I responsible to now??

Thank you for your advices in advance. :)

It seems that you are the victim of an "Erroneous Transfer" which is where a customer Switches supplier, but there is a foul-up in the data being passed around the system and the wrong customer is Switched - The rules in this situation are that wrongly Switched customer should not be out of pocket.

It seems from your post that it's supplier with the wrong meter number who's in error, but I'm afraid it usually takes some time to sort ER's out.

You should start by WRITING a letter headed COMPLAINT to that supplier, and send a copy of the letter to the other supplier to keep them in the picture
  • Thank you for your advice dogshome.
I started a complaint with the first one 2 months ago. they made me do burn-test and then never rang back for result. when I did the test, when I shut mains switch the meter light went to continuous red. now they still sent that wrong bill.
I told the second one that the first one sent me a bill, now they are investigating if they are the supplier.
in the meantime I made a complaint to ombudsman because I had enough of both of them.
these companies are so greedy and I wish you know how they are pushy on the phone, giving false information and etc. they make me really ill.
I was trying to switch to my own supplier, I managed it for gas easily, the electricity part is on hold.
    thanks again.
  • I thought I should give an update so if anybody encounters a similar problem it may help them.
what I found is in the national database our address is occurring twice with 2 different meters.
I am guessing while repairs were done before us, the landlords assigned first supplier who got the wrong meter no from national database. the previous tenants were working with the second one with the meter no just in the entry of the block-meaning the one that I assume is the correct one. that's why 2 suppliers appeared I guess.
I contacted the first one again and they said they will update the national database. but I don't know how they will update it, I don't know the exact outcome yet, but at least I guess I found what was happening.
