Booting from a 2nd HD?

Evening all,
Dell have just replaced an Alienware 17 for me and let me keep the hd from the old machine (due to the total lemon that it was). So I can just install that and carry on with my work instead of having to reload everything (for the 6th time!).
Got the drive into the 2nd bay, changed the bios so it boots from the old drive and everything worked fine yesterday.
Today it just boots into some windows 8 recover/restore screen? The option to repair doesn't work and tells me to go to advanced settings. But the only options there are restore or reinstall w8!! Not any use to me.
There was some message that flashed up about the drive being locked? But it went so fast I didn't have time to read it.
Can anyone suggest how I get this back to booting off the old hd so I can some work done?
Thanks
