American Express/BA American Express

My DH has had an American Express card for many years. It is not used often, usually only on holiday once or twice a year.


We are looking to boost our Avios and wondered what the chances would be of changing cards to the BA card? Could it be done through American Express or would he need to cancel one an apply for the other?

reapply, you can keep the old card if you want , but best to cancel it after you've applied and got your ba cards, then you can apply your credit limit to your new card as you'll only get a couple of grand limit. upon spending the min spending amount within 3 months you will then get your bonus avios. which will boost your avois balance.

i've been to florida, mexico, australia and booked for Kuala lumper (back in first class)the whole family all in business class. it's a great way to travel.

There are a few options available to you which I'd suggest to you, I've listed them below. I personally would suggest option 1. High return per pound and you're not paying any fees. But it depends on your situation.

I personally have the first and second card on the list.
They do have some requirements on the amount you earn, credit checks...blah...


1) Gold Amex Charge Card, if you can spend £2k within 90 days, you'll get 22k bonus + the points for the spend so 24k at least.

Just remember to cancel before the year is up to avoid the annual fee.

2) BA American Express Card, 4k bonus for spending £500 + the points for the spend so at least 4.5k points. (NO FEE)

3) The Platinum Card, 35k bonus for spending £2k in 90 days + 2k for the spend.

There is an annual fee £450, but you can get the bonus points then cancel - and they will refund the cost pro rata.

4) British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card, 19k Avios for £3k spend in 90 days. Plus 1.5 points / £

There is an annual fee £150, but you can get the bonus points then cancel - and they will refund the cost pro rata.

The best advice if you are certainly going to go for a card with bonus points, spend and earn the points then look to shut it down and move elsewhere.
