    No, it really is that simple. The solar panel contract has a lease buyout clause that allows you to take ownership of the solar panels and remove yourself from the contract previously signed - at a cost.

    The vendor could buy this out, the solar panels would then become his property, and would be passed on as a fixture / fitting to the new owner of the house.

    It's nothing to do with the freehold / leasehold status of the property.

    D'oh. You're absolutely right. Although there's still the catch-22 of not being able to buy the house with the panels leased first...

    Doody gave the best advice. I agree, if you cannot contact the company after making proper efforts you can get it changed via solicitor.

    Before reading that I was thinking of suggesting some sort of indemnity policy might be available. Just another suggestion, which may or may not be useful to you.
