What is the purpose of the WAN switch on Linksys WRT54GL?

Hi,
I set up quite a few networks, but there's one annomolly (sp?) that I've never resolved.
The Linksys WRT54GL is a router only and needs a separate modem to be connected to it. It has 4 LAN ports and 1 WAN port. the issue is that I've never been able to get the router to work with the modem connected to the WAN port, it just doesn't detect the modem. So in effect I lose one of my LAN ports, because I have to connect the modem as a network device. In this particular case the modem is a Linksys ADSL2MUE.
Any ideas? Not even Linksys could get the thing to work via the WAN.

WAN (Wide area network) is for you Ethernet based modem. Cable uses Ethernet based modem, though you can get Ethernet based ADSL modems you don't see them so much.
As for annomolly it's spelt anomaly.
(Firefox has GB dictionary add on, for IE or IE based browsers there's IESpell). It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Hmm, that being the cas the ADSL2MUE ethernet modem should work through the WAN. But it just doesn't!

Possibly double nat'ing.
If you plug the ADSL2MUE directly into a PC, and do
start, run, cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
do you get a local ip address, 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x and does the internet work?
If so, see if you can turn off nat in the ADSL2MUE config, then plug into wan port of cable/dsl router.
You could always sell them both, and buy an adsl router with the proceeds. (and then encrypt it properly, and ignore mac address filtering:D).Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Yes the modem has an IP of 192.168.1.1 when connected to the computer.
I'll see about disabling NAT.
Would rather not get a combined modem router as this one has served me well, plus I love geeking around with my linux router. so many more features than the stock one.

It should work but in essence you are NATing twice, with it not working
so id take a guess that both ROUTER and MODEM are on the same range,
set the IP address on your router to 192.168.2.1, SN 255.255.255.0
with the approriate DHCP range for your clients,
Then Check that the WAN port on your router is set to DHCP, (so it picks up an ipaddress from the Modem, which should be 192.168.1.2? poss
Should get you working of a fashion using the wan port0
