Company listed at OH's parents address...

Apologies for this being in a weird place, but I didn't know where to put it!

You know when you buy something online and search your address via postcode? OH's parent's address (so house number and postcode) come up with a company name at the top when you buy something from one website in particular. The company isn't usually on their address if you buy something online from other places. The company is not known to any of the family and seems to have no relevance to their address if you Google it.

OH's parents have lived at this address for over 30 years and we only noticed this about a year or two ago. The company don't seem to have contact details readily available, nothing has ever been received at OH's parent's house for the company. Would you just leave it? The company doesn't have overly good contact details so I don't know if we would get far trying to contact them. Just seems odd..?

  • Probably worth speaking to the local tax office so they can look into this.

Not sure what the tax office has to do with it??

Any company can be contacted via the details available from companies house, but I'm not sure what the point of contacting the company would be either?

When you order from a website you will still tend to get the option to edit the address - the post code / house number is often just a time saver. In practice, the same underlying database is used to populate the data you see. The company you are ordering from might have a bug in the way they access the database.

I believe the owner of the underlying data is the Royal Mail as per http://www.royalmail.com/marketing-services-regular/choose-your-audience/data-management

The company may since have folded, or changed address, and the drop down list of options just includes the former address. Some websites, when I type in my postcode, show all the house numbers in my street, with a duplicate for my next door neighbour with the name of his business, from which he retired long ago.

If OH's parents have not been receiving mail or enquiries in relation to this business, it's probably very old data, and not of concern.
  • Actually we can't edit the address on the website so it comes addressed to OH's Dad, Company Name, Address.
