Gumtree buyer wants me to deliver

I had a recent request from someone who wanted to buy something off me on gumtree except they are to far to meet me in person and asked if i could deliver to them.
What would be the best way to do this without getting scammed? I'm going to tell him/her up front that i will need to have the money in my account first before i post anything so there is no misunderstanding.
I had thought about having them send me the money via bank transfer but i have heard horror stories of people receiving the money and going on to post the item then a couple of weeks later the money gets removed from their account.
cheers

Could you send a paypal invoice or request for money. When you post get proof of posting and delivery you should be covered ok0

No do not accept Paypal (unless your buyer will send it as a "Gift Payment), cash sent special delivery is best if not bank transfer.0

I sell on Gumtree those items I'm NOT prepared to send like big articles - cash on delivery - personal collection. Too much hassle and scammersStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

I'm sorry , I know you are new but that is terrible advice. If you use paypal at all I would seriously urge you to read up on the seller protection side of things, the sticky postage thread on this board is a good place to start.
Have you never noticed the huge big warning notice about seller protection on each paypal payment you get that says (in various forms)
This item is eligible for Seller Protection.
Don't forget to:
Send the item to the delivery address below within 7 days.
Please note: items delivered in person or to a different address are not covered by Seller Protection.
Use a trackable proof of delivery.
Find out more about Seller Protection
Reversals:
Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have sent the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's Seller Protection and following the trading guidelines on our Security page helps to protect you from things like chargebacks.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. What is wrong with doing it by Paypal - you get the tracking information and send it to the verified address? I send invoices and goods for hundreds of pounds outside of eBay - as long as you protect yourself by doing all you need, it is fine.0

Ah I see, because of proof of delivery. I am sure that poster meant to send on a trackable service.0

Gumtree clearly displays a warning that it is for person to person transactions, so follow that advice.
The only way I would even consider posting an item on Gumtree if I was paid by bank transfers.
There is little to no chance of a reversal or any hassle with bank transfer, whereas with Paypal you open yourself up to scammers and if someone is determined to get a refund, Paypal will esssentially enable them to get one.
If you want to post it, then put it on Ebay, as you'll get more interest and a better price.0 -

I think the only guaranteed way of getting your money, without it being clawed back later, is by a postal order.0

Bank transfer is perfectly safe is the seller checks with the bank it was paid as a cash transfer and not a cheque.0
