what boiler to buy

Hi, could someone help me, I have had no hot water or central heating for the last 5 weeks, I live in a small bungalow so only need a 24kw, I have spent many hours reading all makes online and I am more confused than when I started.
I was looking for one for about £600 but can go to £800. I have looked at a Ideal Espirit at a local dealers for £499 ex vat it has a 3 year warranty and comes with flue and clock pack, at the other end of the scale a Potterton titanium £811 inc vat and a Ferox installers Pk, and I have looked at many others in between.
the more I look at the more confused I get. also a plumber quoted £550 to remove the old boiler and fit the new one, does that sound fare .
Your help with this will be very much appreciated.
Thank you Drinda

We live in what I would call a medium sized bungalow: 3 bedrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen and bathroom.

It's now three years since we had our boiler replaced by a local company and the following items were fitted:

Viessmann Vitodens 100, 19 kw condensing boiler
    Viessmann flue kit
    A Ferox TF1 filter
Thermostatic radiator valves to all existing radiators
All pipe, fittings and labour to complete the work
    Five years warranty on boiler
A Gas Safe certificate of installation complying with building regs.

    Cost £1455.00 including VAT.

The Fernox filter is a device to take all sludge from the system and keep it in good condition.

We asked to have the radiator valves fitted - they were not a necessity.

Based on a reliability survey, according to "Which?", the most reliable (top of list) to least reliable (bottom of list) brands of boilers are:

    Worcester
    Veissmann
    Vaillant
    Main
    British Gas
    Alpha
    Glow Worm
    Potterton
    Ideal
    Baxi
    Vokera

    .

I had a combi replaced with a condensing combi earlier this year.

Simple exchange plus adding a Magnaclean unit.

£300 plus the dreaded. Local fully certified guy and all paperwork attended too.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • The esprit is aka procombi, basically a logic with some cheaper parts. Not a bad boiler for the price, the logic I think has upto 10 yrs guarantee as do some Worcester boilers.

potterton and baxi (same boilers basically) are by far the worst, i have plumber friends who love them simply because they get TONS of work repairing them. We had a potterton fitted (cheap landlord) about 14 months ago and so far its had 3 repairs 2 under warranty.
Worcestor bosch are pretty much known for their reliability
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I have heard Vaillant are the most reliable. Veissmann may be better but are they not a lot more expensive?

Do you have a combi boiler at the moment or boiler and cylinder?
Most fitters prefer certain brands based on their experiences with them.
I would suggest getting the boiler that the person you choose to fit recommends.
