Opening a joint account online

Has anyone successfully openend a joint account online without having to both go into a branch? A few years ago I applied for a Halifax account thinking it was a joint application - my wife was event sent a letter to sign but when everything had transfered over I found it was only a single account. To make this joint we both had to go in to a branch, which meant Sat morning only for me, and Halifax were less than useless with appointments so we scrapped that.
I've not tried to apply for a Lloyds Current account, again online since I read you can do this (as long as you don't apply for an overdraft when applying - you make it joint at the end). I've done this and no joy, I've got my card but there's no sign of it being moved to a joint account - and their help desk passed me around 3 deparments being unhelpful.
Are there any banks that will let me open a joint account? All we need is a basic account (no fees, nothing fancy) and preferably contactless payment on the debit card! Thanls.

I think the legalities of joining two financial institutions (yourself & wife) are an extended bit of matrimony where the two of you have to be seen together & thus an online account is a bit hopeful.
Barclays & Lloyds both do Saturday appointments in the North West? Come play the tourist with a double agenda?!0 -

"A joint bank account is no different to a sole current account except that either account holder controls it and can sign cheques, pay in cash and make payments. You can open most of our current accounts as a joint account either online or in branch, but if you're applying in branch, you’ll each need to bring 2 forms of ID with you. You’ll also both need to be UK residents with regular incomes or salaries that you can pay into the account".0 -
We have several joint accounts that were all opened online.0

Lots of good information about joint accounts: https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/joint-accounts
Most joint accounts can be opened online or by phone if you don't apply for an overdraft.

Some bank branches are open Sundays - the ones that spring to mind are M&S and Metro. Whether you'd want an account with either of these is a different question.0 -
Lloyds wanted to see us. But First Direct and Santander accounts were both opened online.0

Hi jlwarlow,
When you apply to add a joint party, that person is sent an email by us. They then need to click on the link within the email and follow the steps within 30 days.
If you applied within the last 30 days, you can arrange for that email to be sent again through the application tracker. To do that, log on to Internet Banking, click on 'Joint accounts' under the 'Day-to-day' heading on the right side of the screen and follow the steps.
If it was more than 30 days ago, you'll need to make a new application to convert the account to joint status. To do that, log on, click 'Joint accounts' option under the 'Day-to-day' heading and follow the steps.
If the email doesn't seem to have been received by the potential joint party, I'd recommend checking the spam/junk mail folder.
I hope this helps,

We applied online at the same time. I then received a letter with a code I had to enter online to add my wife to my account, I did this via the application tracker. This informed me it was successful, however a few days later I received a letter saying we had to take ID into a branch which we did. The branch photocopied her passport and sent it back to the address on the letter with the reference number but we heard nothing back. I then rang the helpline to be told there was no record of this and we had to make an appointment to make my account joint - again in a branch. Which is a pain when I can only go in on a Saturday with my wife and 2 kids and is a little inconvenient.
So what I've done is applied to First Direct - I figured since they don't have branches they can't ask us to go into one to show ID. The application form was a little harder on line but it went through without and issue and showed immediately that it was a joint account. Both of us now have a new First Direct card and I'm in the process of switching from Lloyds to First Direct for the £100 switching bonus - which easily covers the phone calls, parking tickets and time wasted with Lloyds.
tl;dr : Can't apply for joint with Lloyds online, switching to First Direct which can and has and will give me £100 as a welcome bonus.0 -

Hi again jlwarlow,
I'm sorry to hear that this didn't work out.
On occasion, joint account applications made online will be referred to branch. Apologies for the fact there was some sort of mix up after you visited the branch and for the inconvenience caused by that.
Thanks,
