Boiler pump position

Whilst helping my dad balance his rads for winter I noticed BG who installed him a WB 30 CDi last year also installed a new BG branded grundfos on the return but they actually installed it with the head very nearly horizontal (pointing up).

This is bad as it can get air locked and jam.

It's about 45c from being flat and its on a diagonal return pipe. Is this slight angle enough or should it be changed?

I can see a gate on the inlet side but on the outlet going into the boiler there wasn't a gate, it was possibly a screw valve but I didn't check properly and I didn't check the flow side for an isolator.

if it's a open vented system (roof tanks) then the pump is nearly always on the flow out of the boiler, link here to the way the pump should be fitted (last page)
