Planning permission/extension advice

I've just found a 2 bed house that at the moment is idea for me and my girlfriend. It needs a lot of work but we are up for the challenge. The thing is we want to start a family in the near future but 3 bedroom houses are out of our price range.

The house has a sun room on the back and we were thinking if we could get rid of that and build a 2 storey extension in its place giving an extra bedroom would mean we could live there have a couple of kids and not have to move as the schools are really good in the area and family is close by.

The thing that concerns me is that to add an extra bedroom the extension would have to go across the whole width of the house as its quite narrow and because its semi-detached I'm worried we won't get planning permission because of overshadowing the house next door. Is there anyone that could give me advice as it's the only thing that's stopping us from putting an offer in?

  • Have a look round the area, have others done what you propose.

It's always a gamble buying a house you may want to extend a certain way. Planners often have strange views.
