Help - Can't use broadband through extension after LLU upgrade

Hi,
We recently moved from Tiscali to TalkTalk on one of our ADSL lines and the line was moved from BT's equipment onto TalkTalk's LLU as part of the transfer. When we were with Tiscali, and indeed from the very first time we used the internet back in 1999 we've always plugged the modems into a phone extension upstairs next to the computer. This has worked without problems. Tiscali also worked without problems.
So, I tried to do the same with the TalkTalk modem (Speedtouch 330) but it's failing the network check (when you go through the installation with the CD). I tried plugging the modem with a laptop straight into the master socket downstairs and it worked fine.
I know the ADSL signal degrades over distance, but it was fine through the extension with Tiscali 2Mb broadband on the BT equipment but now won't work with the TalkTalk 8Mb on the LLU. Is there anything I can do about this or do I have to resign myself to putting the modem and router downstairs and beaming the internet upstairs via wireless? Or is there something I can do to 'boost' the signal somehow so I don't have to go wireless?
I've tried removing all other telephone equipment from the line, and there are microfilters both downstairs and upstairs. One is a new TalkTalk one, the other a known working one from Tiscali.
