The Dogs Trust usually charges about £70-£80 , not sure if it depends on the area, but it is a great charity that isn't as quick to put animals to sleep as the other well known one:rolleyes:

Pounds are not charities-although some may present themselves as such in Yellow Pages (the one we got our dog from did). They take in dogs that Dog Wardens have picked up off the street. It is my understanding that they get a sum of money from local councils to keep the dogs until they are picked up or put down. The money doesn't vary regardless of the fate of the dogs. The time for picking a lost dog up is 7 days after which they are destroyed/put to sleep whatever phrase you want to use. The charities pick up ones that are most likely to be rehomed-these tend to be the more attractive/younger /less problematic dogs. Some dogs are hard to re-home-big ones, especially black ones, ones who aren't appealing or have 'behaviour problems' etc. A friend of mine adopted a dog on the day it was due to die. A lovely cheery female-she hadn't been adopted because she was not lovely to look at.
Good pounds will hand on to dogs as long as possible-the dreadful ones 'dispose' of the dogs quickly -and the one our dog came from even 'economised' on the euthanasia-suffice to say there wasn't a vet involved.
These dogs tend to be a great lost welfare vaccum -other than the efforts of small dedicated dog rescue charities. it was one of these that eventually got the pound I'm talking about shut down-and it took them years.
