Tips for buying used car

Well you may well get £800, as it's all smoke and mirrors with buying cars. It's the cost to change that matters. E.g. if dealer 1 has a car up for £6000, and offers you £800 part ex, that's worse than dealer 2 who has the same car for £5500 but only offers you £400 for your car.
OK, so you say you love the Micra but the power steering issue is the problem here? I recommend finding a Micra owners club forum (I'm sure at least one will exist somewhere online) and see if any owners near where you live can recommend any Nissan specialists or trusted mechanics who perhaps are more knowledgeable about fixing this fault. It may be that nobody can do a better job than your existing garage, but I'd explore this avenue first if the car is otherwise perfect for your needs. You're right to steer clear of Nissan's £1200 fix!
If no luck, then I'd be looking at a second hand Toyota Yaris/Suzuki Swift/Honda Jazz.0
