Is my car drinking to much?

  • Just got 200 miles from £30 yesterday and I thought that was poor... (approx 38 mpg) (1.2 Petrol).

I'd say that's pretty bad yeah, however is it possible also that the sender unit could be faulty?

You may find that the lambda sensor at the exhaust manifold is failing.
This often results in increased fuel consumption, (and an MOT fail on emissions) but does not cause the "check engine" light to come on until it fails completely.

Could be worth a punt at a new one, as you will get the cost back in a few miles if it takes the consumption from 12 back to 20-22 MPG.

Was going to say the same.
Could be 10 years old, so well past it's best.
As they get tired and dirty, they will read lean, so throw more fuel in until readings are what they expect.

Yesterday I paid £20 for unleaded petrol at around 119p per litre

Where did you find petrol at this price? The cheapest I have seen it is £1.24.9 a litre.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

119.9p per litre Esso Knowl Hill near Maidenhead. Asda 122.7p in Reading maybe nationally. 122.9p BP Reading, 121.9p Burnham and Slough Esso.
  • I would imagine a CRV petrol auto to do mid 20's as an overal average.

    Bloody hell. Over £100 a litre. :D

124.9p is about the price here in West Sussex but, with Tesco Fuel Deals, I can fill up at about 110p next month.

I haven't spent any extra to get that deal.

That is fine for accurate mpg figures. But if as is possibly the case here the op is getting a quarter/third of what they should be a shorter test would probably suffice.

I don't think the OP has got anything like the information needed to condemn a car from what he reported, though.

Yesterday I paid £20 for unleaded petrol at around 119p per litre and after 45 miles I need to refill.

I read that as "tank got low, put £20 in, tank looked a bit low again, had only done 45 miles". In other words, basing the calculation on two readings from a fuel gauge which is only ever vaguely accurate, and a quantity of fuel measured in pounds sterling and not litres.

I can fill my car, drive 50 miles, and still have an apparently full tank. Am I right to assume that my car is doing a million mpg? Any calculation based on a reading of a fuel gauge is highly suspect, in my view.

The Vectra C was like this. Fuel light flashing.. Put £30 in. Drive 100 miles. Fuel light flashed the entire trip. Yet the readout on the computer gave the range.
