Royal Mail Large Letter Postage

Not sure whether this is the right place to post this. Apologise if not. I sold some thing on ebay. When I was trying to post them by 2nd class, the staff in post office told me that this should be 2nd class large because it is too thick. My question is if I stick 2 No. regular 2nd class stamps, which costs 24p each, will royal mail automatically delivery the letter by 1st class (48p)?

try going onto royal mail site and using there postal charge finder. it will ask you for the weight and destination and will then give you the options available to you. You can even print off the postage and stick it to your envelope. From bitter experience, the local post office dont always give you the best deal.

Sorry in advance if anybody doesny like that sweeping statement.
  • If it is Large Letter size and weighs no more than 100g then yes, 48p of stamps would mean it should go First Class because that's the price of 1st Class postage for the size and weight, regardless of whether you use one 48p or two 24p stamps. ALternatively, you could be stingy and buy a 40p stamp to post it 2nd class.

the nice lady in my post office suggested i sellotape the sides of a letter in and it would go for 98p instead of £1.48 as i had only charged £1 p&p that was a real help

if only all the post office staff were that helpful !!!!

so its worth measuring your parcels as well as weighing them

This is a really good service, and it stops you having to run to the post office with every piece of post that isn't a thin C5 envelope

I regularly send out samples which are a 120g large letter £0.60 2nd Class I stick a £0.34 first class stamp on them , take them to the PO who print out a £0.26 2nd class sticker to make up the balance. More often than not they arrive the next day so I'd guess the Royal Mail take more notice of the 1st Class stamp.

Next day delivery for the second class price.

I've started doing stuff like that too since the Pricing In Proportion system was introduced. Ironically, I often end up using more packaging, e.g. by taping an envelope, or using cardboard inserts to flat-pack a flexible item.
