How much to spend on gift?

Wow thank you, such a lot of useful replies.
I have already purchased a gift which was £50 and is personal to her and new hubby (they don't have a list or even any requests!), so was looking for a 'filler' for the remainder.
I'm leaning towards £50 gift and £50 in vouchers. On 'paper' we could afford more, but don't want to look either cheap nor extravagant.
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -
I was in my best friends wedding. I have known her for more than 3/4 of my life. I couldn't afford to give her and the new hubby a lot especially since I was in the wedding it was costing a lot. I gave her a card, a few homemade gifts and a gift card for $50. (Yes I am in the US) :-)
She knew I couldn't afford much and yelled at me for spending anything on them at all. She told me being a part of the wedding (and all that that entailed) was more than enough of a gift.
I would say only give what you can afford. Even if it is just a card and a candle or something small. If she is really a good friend she will understand you gave what you could. She will be happy that you were able to be a part of her special day.0
