Trouble renting as lived outside UK for 4 years

We are trying to rent property in SE England but are having trouble as we've lived overseas for the last few years. We both have UK credit cards and I even have a mortgage in Scotland, ( I'm renting that place out). We have references and I've been working for 6 months so I thought all would be hunky dory with our credit checks. Well, no. So I'd love a bit of advice on 2 matters. Firstly, how on earth do you rent somewhere in England, we don't want to ask our elderly parents to be guarantors. And secondly, we explained the situation to the letting agent who said the credit check wouldn't be a problem and happily took our £480 non refundable deposit! Is it possible to get that money back as we feel he was unreasonable. Thanks

Are you saying they said no problem to the situation you outlined, you paid a £480 deposit, and then turned you down?Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0

Could u offer to pay six months rent upfront?
I think you need to look at your receipt for the £480 and tell us what it says (what was the £480 to cover, its rather a lot for credit searches which only cost the LA £25). If its a deposit, it should be refundable.0 -

We had the same problem in 2010 when we returned to the UK after 4 years away. Also, we were self-employed!!
In order to rent we had to provide a guarantor (my brother-in-law stepped up to the plate on that one), and we paid a double deposit. A pain, but we were able to do it so it didn't create too much of a problem for us.
Is there anyone else who could act as guarantor? Why don't you want to ask your parents?
We were also working within the EU (so much for free movement!!), we kept a UK current account, and OH continued to pay NI contributions - none of that made any difference. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
