To bait or not to bait

I am about to leave 2 country cottages empty for 5 months. One has been empty for a month and I have baited for mice who have been and taken the bait but left no other evidence. My question is am I attracting mice by baiting as there is nothing else to attract them? Or should I bait to kill them off and stop them multiplying. Any advice would be very helpful.

I've found one of those plug in repellents very successful. Difficult to measure the efficency but we were getting quite a few mice, tried traps and bait. I also didn't like the idea of dead mice in walls, under floorboards etc.
Haven't seen any signs since using one of these. (I went for the ultra sonic, magnetic field type thinking that the dearer one would be the most efficient!) HTHThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

I had mice in the loft space and there's no food in there, the best thing to do is to seal all the entry points so that the mice can't get in. It's no good baiting if you aren't there to monitor it.0
