Craaaash - the sound of my PC....

Arrrrrgh - the sound of me trying to fix my pc....

My PC keeps turning itself off. It gives no warning, and is often when I am using power hungry programs like photoshop, but by no means is this always the case - sometimes there is nothing much running at all.

When it reboots, I get a report message saying something like....

Can anyone offer any help or advice - it is driving me mad!

Thanks in advance.

Made any changes recently? Drivers or hardware wise? Things that come to mind:

    1) Driver update (or some other software install) has gone wrong - causing crashes
    2) Recently added hardware is conflicting with existing hardware - causing error flags
    3) Some piece of hardware is on its way out, which means it will get worse.

So what have you changed? What hardware are you using? And where are you getting these messages, boot screen, windows or in a BSOD?
Faith is believing what you know ain't so...

Also, go to C:\WINDOWS\Minidump and zip the most recent few files in that folder, upload it onto the internet onto a filehosting site such as https://www.mediafire.com and post the link to the download here.
  • Thanks for all those suggestions - really appreciated.

I have started at the top and will work my way down the list! Read through one of the forums suggested by Wombat and am looking at a potential RAM problem.

I did a RAM Stress Test on Prime95 software which was one of the ideas on the forum and it highlighted an error. Have taken out one of my sticks of RAM and doing another test (so far so good), and will see whether that fixes my problem (or just slows the PC down!).

I am quitely confident it may have resolved the issue. However, I have been quietly confident the last 7 times I have 'resolved the issue' only to find it happen again!....

Ah, having just said that, the stress test failed after 30 mins (whihc is better than the 1min from before)

I think I will carry on trying things and see where I end up....

When I had this problem it turned out to be a dodgy electical connection
  • Just to update - if anyone has a similar problem - I decided to take out one of my RAM sticks (if there was a problem with one it was 50-50, and I got lucky) and put in one of my older smaller RAMs instead, and it seems to have stabilised the system. I did some really power hungry work yesterday on Photoshop CS2 and it didn't crash once. Before it crashed about 10 times a day!

So I am keeping my fingers crossed, but I can recomend the Prime95 software (the stress test is part of it, to check you can run the pirme95 properly). even though my ram is still reporting a fault, I am hoping it is insignificant enough not to cause a problem.

    Thanks for all your help.
