would a travel insurance policy pay out for missed flight due to car breakdown?

Options
Just wondering if many policies would cover arriving late at the airport due to car breakdown, traffic, public transport failure?

some will, you would need to check the wording in the policy. It will normally mention that you have allowed sufficient time to get to the airport and have evidence of the delay/breakdown - so AA/garage report etc (otherwise people that want to cancel travel would just call up and say their car broke down) If you missed a flight due to this the insurance should help with costs of getting you on a later flight

    As above. Check your policy.
Bupa, for example (not particularly promoting them, but know from experience they are good with claims), say...
We will pay up to the amount shown in the table of
benefits for the reasonable extra costs of travel and
accommodation you incur to reach your booked holiday
destination if you cannot reach the final international
departure point on the outward or return journey from or
    to the United Kingdom because:

o public transport services fail due to poor weather
conditions (but not including weather conditions
defined as natural catastrophe), a strike, industrial
    action or mechanical breakdown; or

o the vehicle in which you are travelling is directly
involved in an accident or suffers a mechanical
breakdown (this would not include your vehicle
running out of fuel, oil or water or suffering a flat tyre,
    puncture or flat battery).

As an example, my friend missed a flight because freezing fog caused sever traffic delays. Her insurance (provided by NatWest as part of a premium bank account) paid for the replacement air ticket when she re-scheduled her holiday. Had she simply not travelled she would not have received anything as compensation.
