Of course you have the right to complain if you feel you are being mistreated, but I'm really struggling to understand why you have such an issue with completing a simple task that will help prevent money laundering? It might not be your job per se, but it's aiming to help stop this type of illegal activity and I personally don't object to doing my bit to keep society fairer. It's a sad society when people only think of themselves.

Should I just sit here and accept the status quo even though it is complete and utter BS?

I operate a small business in Norfolk. Yet just this year alone I have made two financial crime reports. You may think its BS. However, it is unlikely you have any experience of criminal activity and what they do to launder money. If so, you are not in a position to judge whether it is BS or not.
Should I just say f it all and go into the drug game. I mean if I am a criminal by default then I may aswell be doing the crime and getting paid for that.

Perhaps you already are doing that. Unless the solicitor asks for evidence, they will never know.
So these money laundering regulations...tell me more...why do we have these regulations?

Because criminals use dirty money to buy assets, such as houses.
why is it somehow my job to prevent money laundering? I'm not the police.

Its not your job. It is your solicitor, bank, broker/adviser etc that is responsible.
Money laundering and buying property are absolutely nothing to do with eachother.

    Yes they are.

For example, If I accused you of being a drug dealer and asked you to prove you weren't. If you refuse to cooperate then I will inflict economic damage on you. This is what I mean by guilty until proven innocent. You did nothing wrong, you aren't dealing drugs, but I am asking you to prove you aren't doing something illegal with no basis for the accusation in the first place.

Sorry, did your solicitor *actually* accuse you of being a money launderer? Did they say "You're a money launderer"?

If so, you probably actually have cause for complaint.

If they didn't, your analogy is miles off.

Imagine you were going to lend someone some money. You might say to them "will you pay me back?" are you accusing them of being a thief? A defaulter? Are you assuming they won't pay you back?

I'm fairly sure, actually, that the lender may have asked you questions to this effect. So I'd add these accusations to your complaint.

I'm paying for the solicitor to exist. Therefore it kinda becomes my job by proxy.
    This is a wind up.

Paying someone to do a job does not make that your job. If thats the case in the last month I have become a plasterer, decorator, plumber and kitchen fitter.... how easy was that? Not a day in college, passing any exams and I have 4 new jobs im fully qualified for to my CV.

If your going to be stupid, your going to get stupid replies.

Im all for adult debate/conversation but if your going to be daft then there is no point.

    I wont be replying anymore.

when you buy a car do you have to prove where the money to buy it has come from? (by the way there are cars which are as expensive as my house before you say it is not the same thing)

No. However, you do have to verify your ID which is one of the requirements of the money laundering regs.

  • If you think the concept of checking gifted deposits is wrong, then by all means go via your mp to voice your concerns.

The suggestion that you're entitled to compensation as a result of being subject to these checks is, however, ludicrous.

    Absolutely.
  • Thanks for all of your comments.

After taking stock of what you all have said I have come up with some actions, suggestions for others. I hope someone might take some lessons learnt from my experience.

    1. If possible do not get gifted money and if you do it is probably best not to declare this to the solicitor!

    2. Use a solicitor who is has your back. This probably goes without saying but if possible i'd advise using a solicitor which isn't a stickler for the rules. Having a solicitor whos favourite phrase is "i'm going to pretend you didn't say that" is probably in your best interest.

    3. If you are a money launderer do not try and buy property.

    4. Complaining to your MP is likely to achieve nothing other than annoying everyone.

    5. The current law on money laundering puts the burden of crime prevention onto joe public and not where it should be i.e the police. I don't think this is fair. Most of you seem to disagree.

    6. There isn't a straightforward way of dealing with BS rules regarding buying a house. Before you make that offer it might be worthwhile considering if the ends justify the means as you may well end up out of pocket and living out of a box if you don't ride the solicitors and bank day and night.

Doesn't appear that you've taken much notice of what's been written. As you are merely expressing uninformed opinion with no factual relevance. So I'll depart at this point and wish you good luck in your quest.
