Just a wee update to say thank you to everyone. I used the bicarbonate of soda because I had some in. It took a lot of bicab and elbow grease but it is now clean. I am going to look out for the Astonish and see if I get a better result. I was very happy with the result of the Oven Pride as the oven racks are really clean & sparkling.

"Q. Can Brillo® Steel Wool Soap Pads or Brillo® Singles be used to clean glass?
    A. Yes, as long as there is soap in the steel wool pad, it is safe to clean glass surfaces"

I resorted to using a brillo pad on my glass oven door. I was prepared to risk it scratching the surface, but it doesn't seem to have damaged it at all.

Hi PRUDENT there is an amazing product that you can get in the 99p shops or places like hardware shops called ASTONISH oven and cookware cleaner. It's a paste in a small square topped tub which is the best thing I've ever found for cleaning oven glass. It works on hobs and inside ovens too and on pots and pans and is non scratch and very easy to use. Hope that helps, Lyn xxx.

Another recommendation for this - it's brilliant and such a bargain. I use it to keep on top of my oven and it works really well.

    Yet another vote for Astonish!

I use it on my ceramic hob too. I especially like that it doesn't smell of chemicals and doesn't leave any chemical smells in the oven.

  • I have a smashing lady who comes once a year and give my oven a complete clean inside and out, glass door and s/steel shelves and rings. It costs me £35.00 but money well spent as I too cannot kneel to clean owing to clapped out joints and old age :) She uses Astonish as well and she does it for a living so I figure she knows what she is doing .She also replaced the oven bulb which had blown as well .Great value and I applaud her industry. She started up the business when she was left after her divorce with little but her son to raise and a bucket full of energy.More power to her (at least half my age elbow ) :):):)

I also recommend Astonish or barkeeper's friend. If you can't get them at pound shops or home bargains, Lakeland sell them although they're a bit more expensive. Hob Brite is also brilliant for glass hobs.

When I first moved into my current flat, my new flatmate deep fried all of his food (usually fish) in a wok full of oil and, as a result of not cleaning, all of the work tops, backsplash tiles and the cooker hood were coated in an unmoveable layer of sticky grease. Talk about a fire hazard, it was like one of those Chinese restaurants you hear about going up in smoke because they never cleaned the oil off the cooker hood and a pan caught fire!

It took me many different cleaning products and 2 months to uncover astonish and it was the only thing that cut through the grease.

  • I use Brillo pads (or whatever the cheap version of them is), or the green scrubby pads with fairy liquid and washing soda. Both work well on my glass oven doors and I only clean them when they are very filthy! A rinse in hot water with vinegar should take any streaks off.

Soda crystals are good. You can get liquid ones in a spray bottle which I use for general cleaning. The best thing for removing grease bar anything else I've ever used. Plus they're cheap :D

Spray on and leave for a few minutes, and very little elbow grease is needed.

I have loads of different cleaners for the house, but use only three on the oven and hob.
For a light oven clean, I use Astonish oven spray cleaner, but for a quarterly deep clean I use Oven Pride (now available at various outlets for as little as £2.99), which gets the oven looking like new.
For the oven door istart off with a spray of Astonish, and then use Astonish cream cleaner for any lttle spots which resist.
For the ceramic hob, I use Astonish oven cleaner and cream cleaner if there is anything burnt on.
I also use the spray on oven cleaner on the top of the extractor fan housing, which can get a lttle greasy.
