Trying to find a job without fixed location and company car

Hello, I am currently between places and also looking for work. I remember seeing a job advert a while back for a job that involved traveling around the country in a company car to various business and workplaces to demonstrate and teach how to use a certain piece of software. The job requirements fitted me. There was no specific qualification required. I would have a company car and I would drive to workplaces around the country, with fuel and hotel costs covered. So now that my current position would work well for such a role, I am trying to find similar work. Trouble is I don't know how to specifically look for this work. I don't remember how I came across the vacancy before. Going through all the adverts on the major job websites isn't yielding many results, but I think that is because I am not defining my search terms very well. So I need to know, is there a specific name for this type of job that doesn't have a fixed workplace but involves traveling around the country? And are there any companies or agencies specializing in this kind of work. Hmm, I've asked this question in other places and people have responded with answers like 'become a trucker'. Not really the answer I'm looking for. I'm not looking for career ideas, I just know what search terms or agencies would help me find a job that involves -No fixed workplace, -Company Car, -Hotel stays. Thanks for the help! (EDIT: sorry about the lack of paragraphs, I don't know why they aren't appearing when I post)

Sounds like you are talking about field based jobs but its not really a specialism in itself as you get travelling salesman, support technicians, consultants that work on site with the clients and a whole host of other jobs.
I dont know your personal situation but it is worth thinking about fairly seriously if its for you or not. Working on the road is not as glamorous or sex laidened as the movies would suggest. Some of my clients have required me to travel extensively and yes going to some places is always good but the majority of time you wouldnt choose to live in the cities your sent to, nor the nameless/faceless hotel you are put up in and if you are living there for a month its as boring/ isolating as hell.0 -
I'm not interested in any potential glamor, neither is this a career plan. Its simply because I've moved from one place and now I'm just in my parents house until I move onto the next place after winter. I have friends up and down the country that I can visit, and the lone time I can use to focus on study and creativity (I find it quite hard to force myself to be alone to do these things that are important to me). The job vacancy I remember seeing was a temporary role from what I remember, lasting perhaps no longer than six months. Again, this would suit me perfectly right now.0

Looks like some kind of IT Trainer job to me. And a contract - that is different than "temporary role". You would need to register as self employed, most contractors registr as LTD.
If it is bespoke software then possibly they would train you first and then send you out.
If anything more common - they will expect you to know it.
I work as a trainer and do contracting but I personally refuse any jobs out of London as would not relocate.
But I do get a lot of emails about such jobs - they normally ask for training qualification though (TAP/CIPD being most common) and in depth knowledge of at least 2 specific systems(in addition to Windows/Office/various databases) - but I work with clinical that have been rolled nationally so there is a bit of competition for GOOD contracts.
Try contacting specific IT Recruitment Agencies and talk to them - for starters perhaps Premier IT. They do not pay much to be honest but I know they often take people with no experience.. seen few of their contractors.. sighhhh0 -
Does it have to be IT specifically?
In the past people who did this sort of things were called commercial travellers or reps - not sure if companies still use this method for getting their message out.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
No, it doesn't have to be IT, but that would probably suit me quite well.
I'm not the sort of person to do sales though, which is what all of the results for 'rep' including 'company car' come up as. Not for me (especially medical sales :undecided).
And then without including the search term 'company car' I just find results for club reps, ect.
Is this term 'reps' used as a definition for a job that involves what I have described above? Since I assume it means 'representative' I'm unsure...0 -
Trainer may be closer to the mark.
Nobody is going to give you a salary and a car for just driving around the country though.
What have you got to offer?0 -

Erm, hello? That reply was not pointless OR patronising! People are trying to help you here, so maybe you should't be so rude!
The point of the post was , what you will be paid for, is training people / demonstrating products, what are your areas of knowledge? This is quite important!0
