Failed Neff Integrated Fridge Freezer

This integrated appliance in our fitted kitchen is presumably ten years old as it was in our 2004 built house when we bought it three years ago.
About a year ago it failed. Both freezer and fridge compartments started warming up and no amount of fiddling with the very limited control panel made any difference. It wasn't the power as the light still worked.
An engineer took a quick look at it and said it was probably the compressor. He left saying he would get back with a quote to repair it.
However the next day it started working again and has worked fine until today when it has failed again.
I don't mind buying a new appliance but, if I can get this working again I would prefer that.
I'm pretty good at DIY and can fix many things but I don't know where to start with a fridge freezer.
I've put everything in the second fridge freezer we have in the garage so I can take my time either repairing or replacing it.
Where should I start, or is there nothing an amateur can do?
It isn't a power problem as the internal light still works.
Could it be something as simple as a build up of dust on the coils at the rear or is it more likely to require a new compressor or other component? If the latter, I suspect I am better off buying a new appliance.
I haven't removed it yet.
I've emptied it and allowed all the ice to melt and dried it out. I'm hoping it might start working again just as it did a year ago.
Thanks.

Difficult one. Unless your repair is going to cost you under £100, a better solution might be to replace the fridge freezer.
A modern unit compared to one from around 2004 would easily be about 40% lower on energy consumption, so spending too much on a product that probably has only another 5 years left in it might not be a great use of money. A new fridge-freeer can be reused in a new kitchen should that be something on your horizon. We’ve had to remove your signature.
