Sticky cables or calipers a common MK3 issue. £60 for a caliper or less.

  • so just to update the thread, it turned out to be a seized calliper and cables are ok. so £68 all in to change
  • Has it now passed?

Presumably just the handbrake part of the mechanism as the footbrake wasn't mentioned?
My A4 used to do that, could tell by handbrake lever not springing back to rest.
Quick squirt of oil every now and then sorted it out.
  • No one will ever fully understand a Mondeo Mk3 handbrake until they own a Mondeo Mk3..

That used to catch a lot of people out on the Mk3, park on a hill after a long drive, handbrake on and come back later to find the car at the bottom of the hill.
As the rear disks cooled they contracted and effectively released the handbrake.

The FORD advice at the time, press the footbrake when applying the handbrake so it applies with more force.

Probably one of these two recalls

Calipers used to get sticky on my old car. I cured that by giving it a good dose of WD40 or plusgas and not leaving it parked with the handbrake on.

  • My Mondeo failed on the handbrake.
Smacked it with a lump hammer (the caliper that is) and freed it up. It passed.
    It'll sieze again soon.
