Travel only insurance, not medical?

Hope there are some insurance experts out there to help.
Next year we are going to France for 3 or 4 months to sort out our house which has been let and sell it.
Because of pre-existing conditions insurance will be prohibitive but we know our EHIC card will cover emergencies and 70% of other medical costs so do not want medical cover.
But we would like travel insurance to cover travel delays, theft, illness or death of relative etc. for the journey and our stay out there.

Simple... choose any policy, and write to them asking them to remove medical cover.

I've used EhicPlus in similar situation.

  • There are plenty of insurers that simply exclude pre-existing conditions and so will still cover you for a significant accident. Whilst EHIC will cover most of your medical expenses you could still be stuck in a french hospital for months or a year or more whereas the medical section of your travel would pay to repatriate you as soon as you are fit for a medivac

As to your own items, most policies have very limited cover for personal possessions and you may well be better looking to your Home insurance's Personal Possessions cover which often gives global cover all risk cover.
  • Have you tried Insure & Go - I have a serious medical condition and my mum had cancer and they insured us both. She went to North America, I got 2 weeks in Europe cover for only £6 more than the regular price - other companies were quoting me almost £100! If regular cover with them is cheaper than non-medical cover with someone else then it would be worth a free phone call to ask.

I think a lot of annual policies have a limitation on the length of any trip of, maybe, a month. Backpackers for instance need to get special insurance and can't rely on a normal annual policy for one long holiday.

As you are going for a long period you need to be sure the cover will apply.

Thanks all, I think the main problem is the fact we are going for more than a month so insurers are wary.
