changing default video player on mac

i have some videos on a memory stick however when i come to play it on my macbook air the videos need to convert, which takes some time.

however i can right click and chose vlc player and this opens up and starts playing instantly, rather than waiting for the conversion.

so my question is is there a way to change the default video player so when i double click on a video vlc auto-loads and starts playing.

Not got my Mac in front of me, but when you right-click on the file is there not an option to choose what to open it with ? Go into this (don't just select VLC straight away) then find VLC and at the bottom of the screen that appears, tick the box to set VLC as default.
