  • How about all going on a wreath making course. Local florists and National Trust often do it

  • The film idea is good - possibly a festive classic on Christmas Eve with new pyjamas and a takeaway?

How about a DIY Christmas manicure for you and your daughter(s) on Christmas Eve?

You can buy sheets of stick-on nail accessories like snowflakes etc. really cheaply and there are loads of nail art sites and YouTube videos showing you how to do particular looks.

There are some ideas here for example.

My teenage DGD loves to have a Christmas jumper (not as a gift, one she's chosen herself to wear over the holiday) and a onesie and slippers. Plenty of cheapos in Primark.

Ask them to go through the Christmas TV guides and pick out things they'd specially like to see/record.

And some time without the TV to play a few board games/cards with nibbles on the side.

And I always ask if there's anything special they'd really like to eat (crisps flavours or sweets or anything).

When I was growing up, my brother and I were allowed to open one of the presents from under the tree on xmas eve. These were the ones from aunties. uncles, grandparents etc.
I carried on this tradition with my own children and even now that they're 23, 29 and 31, they still ask if they can open one on xmas eve if they're here!
  • We used to take ours ice skating (Gateshead - out door skating rink every year around Christmas) - late afternoon, getting dark, lights coming on, Christmas music, all wrapped up in hats and gloves. Fab.

Sometimes it's the little things - I'd always read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' to them on Christmas Eve when they were little, but sort of 'forgot' as they got older. But then they'd ask me to do it!! Last year I read it to my grandaughter for the first time (at her mother's request) - could hardly get the words out without welling up.

And actually, it's OK if your super-cool teen wants to opt out. The world won't come to an end!!

Christmas Eve was usually a good film with mulled wine for me and mulled apple juice for the young 'uns and they still want it now that they are in their 20s.

Ours still all look forward to the annual panto trip! (our youngest is 12)
Everyone also still has their own stocking, there would be mutiny if they didn't get them.
