MOT dilemma
Hi
My Peugeot 106 (52 plate, 150k miles) has failed its MOT.
Needs:
(i) New rear axle
(ii) 4 new tyres - ok normal wear and tear (£170 from blackcircles)
(iii) 3 'bolts' - can't be more specific on this at the moment.
I've been told it will cost £816 to rectify all this, £400+ for the axle.
What are peoples opinions on this?
Should I get the problems fixed (I do ~5k miles per year)?
Or get rid?
p.s. I've had it since 2007 and it's been 4 years since the cam belt etc was changed.

New rear axle? It's a torsion bar on the 106 I believe, and there are specialists who can recondition them for, probably, less money.
However, I'd expect you could get a secondhand axle for a couple of hundred quid max (ebay show brand new and refurbed axles for ~£250) and fitting isn't ridiculously hard (there's about 6 bolts on the axle mounts, IIRC).
If you like the car and you're happy to keep it, personally I'd look for a cheaper axle and have it fitted, and pay for the rest. Even if it's £816, that's less than it'd cost you to buy a replacement car, and there could be more things wrong with one if you did.0 -
The rear end is a very common problem on these cars and people handy with the spanners are well advised to buy a recon, or guaranteed second-hand, complete unit and swap over themselves. If you are not going to do the work yourself and it also needs four tyres, get it on eBay/Gumtree. There will be buyers in the £200-300 range as is, but the car certainly isn't worth you throwing money at with labour prices to contend with.0

You need to carefully price this up and then weigh the pros and cons. I think I would be tempted to to buy something a bit a newer.0

If I were to repair it - could I declare it SORN (tax is due this month end) to give me some time to go through my options?
And if it's SORN can I drive it somewhere to get it repaired? (a mate might be able to do axle, hence why I ask)0 -
If it's SORN the only place you can drive it to IIRC is an MOT pre-booked and back.
You can declare it SORN at any time provided it's not kept or used on a public road.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

I'd scrap it and put the money towards something newer with less miles under it's belt.

Add the cost of cambelt and service it may need, and any advisories there may be for next year, all adds up.0
