Walk more if you can, lots more ideally. Cheapest and easiest way to increase your physical activity.

I found the 5:2 to be a complete waste of time, but then different people need different techniques, no "one" will work for everyone.

I have to say that since I started only eating meat 3 times a week, my diet has been much better and I've saved £££!

I downloaded the free app "MyFitnessPal" - if you're not keen on calorie counting (I'm not - I prefer eating well and exercising, but each to their own :) ) it's still a really good tool for finding out what nutrients you're lacking and how you can up them. For example, I thought my diet was really good, but it was lacking in iron and potassium.

This also has helped me to lose weight over the past three weeks - I've been doing the sofa to 5k challenge (so far I'm at 2k) and combined witha better diet have lost 7lb!

If I can do it, you can too! :) Good luck.

  • Personally found that I needed to go and be weighed at class to make me stick to it, so the £5 at S/W was worth it for me.

If you have the willpower to go it alone, then go for it. There are lots of support threads on here :)

  • You don't need to go it alone and you don't need to pay for it either. Aegean mentioned MyFitnessPal - it's not just an app, it's an online community where you can track your weight, food and exercise. You can make friends with other people in the same situation as yourself and check out what they're eating and how many pounds/kg they've lost and there are lots of forums and recipe ideas. It's American but it's got masses of UK foods in the database and it's completely free. See http://www.myfitnesspal.com.

    I sound like I work for them - I don't! Just a satisfied user.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Definitely try MyFitnessPal, its really working for me. The calorie counting is actually really easy with their database and I find it much easier on a budget than eating Slimming World style. I have it synched with MapMyWalk on my phone so I can earn exercise calories, it motivate me to move more as well.

A friend of mine uses this app and also feels the need to publicly weigh in, she and a friend go to her mum's house every week to be weighed there, they each pay her £2 each week for the privilege which they will get back when they reach goal weight!

I have a hobby which requires me to stay on or around 76Kg and for a 34 your old bloke who loves Beer and food and hates Gym's is a challenge. (i'm 5'10 so not a midget). I went from 90kg to where I am now over about a year and a half.

It is hard to give advice without knowing your starting point. But there are some simple ideas that work really well.

    1. Find a low impact exercise you enjoy. (don't run running sucks, ruins your body and will hurt) Try Swimming, cycling stuff like that. 3 times a week for 30 mins at first. Make it part of your routine.

    2. No Carbs at night. Eat salads, beans, veg with fish, chicken etc. You have no way of burning them off sat in front of the TV. Or asleep for that matter.

    3. Good breakfast, something like porridge, go 'big bowl' first, plain with added fruit. You can reduce the size later. This should see you through till lunch, well that is the objective.

    4. Eat whatever you like for lunch, you need the energy, literally whatever you like (obviously not a McDonalds or Subway). Home made sandwich or something. Eat some Carbs. If you have a salad at lunch you will be starving by 2. If you scrimp at lunch you will snack.

    5. Afternoon Snack, you need an afternoon snack to see you through till home time. I'm a right grumpy !!!!!! unless I have my Bannana.

    6. And most important, if you are going to count the calories, don't just drop down to like 1500 or something daft. Make the changes above first, build a routine then reduce the intake.

Couple of other tips. Avoid ready meals, fast food. they are full of salt and sugar. Always cook with fresh meat and veg, eat planty of fish. Cut red meat down to once a week (we arent designed to eat it)

Don't cut out treats. ( I have a bag of crisps with my lunch every day, in fact I eat whatever I want at lunch) if you loose treats you are doomed to fail.

You will find after about 6 months, your body will reject any salty sugary foods. I had a ready meal indian the other day, I was in a terrible state the next morning!!

As another example of each to their own, I haven't eaten breakfast/anything before 11:30am for years unless it's a special occasion (eg morning event with breakfast served)

I was under the impression bananas were rediculously high energy tho? Whenever I've been trying to slim down it's been apples and the occasional orange for afternoon snacking

    Not really.

Breakfast is important to get your matabalism going in the morning. If you don't eat breakfast you won't feel hungy until 11. But it doesn't mean its good for you. If you follow point 2, I guarantee you will want breakfast.

Bannan's are high in energy yep, thats the point. They also have no fat plus loads of other good stuff. You eat a Bannana to stop you eating all the other rubbish and you will have loads of energy to go and do some exercise.

Bananas contain 120 to 150 calories give or take which I don't consider ridiculously high energy. Bananas are packed with essential nutrients such as potassium and vitamin B12, not to mention fibre.

I think everybody knows that eating less and moving more is the key to weight loss. The ratio I've heard is 70% diet and 30% exercise. Abs are made in the gym and revealed in the kitchen.

I know what I need to do but found that joining a slimming club gave me much better results than muddling along on my own. Getting weighed every week and being told how much weight I'd lost gives me a real boost which helps when you have those days where you want to pack it all in and reach for the biscuit tin. You also get to meet people in the same situation with the same goal as you. My friends and family mean well but they often encourage me to be "bad", giving it all the, "one won't hurt" and it takes willpower to tell them repeatedly that I don't want a %&@?ing biscuit.
