wealdroam: my question was whether they were breaking any law. If Mobiles.co.uk refused to sell to me because of a bad credit rating they would have to tell me what was in my credit history that put them off. Mobiles.co.uk and Carphone Warehouse seem to have got round that by creating an entirely spurious reason for not selling to me and then not telling me in any useful way what that reason was.
powerful_Rogue: the Experian score merely shows that as far as they are concerned my credit rating is excellent. I'll have a look at Equifax and CallCredit as well - thanks.

Look at what Equifax and CC report, but don't pay for your 'credit score', as it's meaningless and a complete total waste of money. The 'score' is simply invented by the credit reference company according to their internal metrics which can be completely different to companies that are actually looking to give you credit.

That's incorrect im afraid. They don't have to tell you whats in your credit history that put them off - simply because they wouldn't know.

In fact they don't tell you because if they did you could just circumvent that check.

This is why banks and other credit providers internal scoring algorithms are kept secret.
  • Exactly the same problem, they gave me the excuse that my credit check failed but my Experian report was 999. The issue was to do with the network provider not doing the price plan Mobiles.co.uk were advertising.

Very messy situation and still I have no phone, i wouldn't recommend using them again.

I wouldn't place too much importance on what is essentially a made up number. As said above, companies keep their credit check requirements under lock and key to prevent people trying to get around them. They also have different requirements that they look for, so it's not a case of one size (or number!) fits all.

Doesn't excuse the poor service from mobiles.co.uk though.

I don't think they often even perform a credit check with the CRAs, they have some sort of internal fail 'internal checks' - I have had a half dozen successful contracts with them but now I am persona non grata on their 'internal checks' - perhaps because I have always claimed my cash back successfully?!

Note with the CRAs you can see your report and ask to have a notce of correction added, with CarphoneWarehouse you are not able to ask to see this info so can not try to get anything corrected. time for a data protection act request?
    I think....
