Reclaiming PPI - Have i left it too long?

Hi,
I sent off letter to Barclaycard to reclaim PPI, they came back to say that i definitely had it but that i wasnt 'Mis-sold it'. They then stated i had X amount of time to respond. I left it too long to pass it onto Ombudsman, however i did send it ombudsman and they came back to say unless i had a reasonable excuse for not replying in time then i wouldnt be able to take the claim forward?
Have i any chance of getting it back now? What would anyone suggest to use as a reasonable excuse for not responding in time?
Thanks in advance.

It would have to be a very serious verifiable REASON (not excuse) for FOS to even consider allowing you to refer your case after more than six months has elapsed. Reasons typically accepted would be the death of a family member or suffering an acute illness. You should also note that you'd have to account for all the time since your complaint, not just the initial six months.Donttalkback wrote: »What would anyone suggest to use as a reasonable excuse for not responding in time?
I would imagine your complaint is already over.0 -
So I cant reclaim it at all now?0

Not sure what the question is there (you use question mark but it isnt a question). However, you have 6 months to appeal a decision with the FOS if you disagree with the firm. You didnt appeal within 6 months. An extension would only be granted if you have significant reasons to justify the whole period of the delay. This typically means death of direct family member or incapacity. So I cant reclaim it at all now?
Your complaint is over unless you can justify the whole period of delay from the complaint rejection to now.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
If Barclays rejected your complaint (not claim) then you have six months to refer it to FOS. Six months is 6 months not 10 or 20 or 30.0

So you want us to think up a good excuse for you so you can lie to the ombudsman ????make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I wanted to see if there was any way i could still claim back the PPI. If there isn't thats fine. Thanks for your help.0

I think one or two responses to this thread have been slightly harsh, but they are correct in substance. Assuming that your Final Decision Letter gave you FOS rights and explained that they lasted for six months then they will not normally consider anything outside that time frame. The only way is if there were exceptional circumstances which prevented you referring it within the six months. Dunstonh has provided some examples (the main ones) of what type of circumstances may be acceptable. "I was abducted by aliens" will not be believed!0 -
Ha, that's grand. Thanks mate.0

As did I, in an earlier post (the second in the thread) !:pInsider101 wrote: »Dunstonh has provided some examples (the main ones) of what type of circumstances may be acceptable.
You have left it too late. Do note that referring your case to the Ombudsman would have in no way guaranteed a payout. The Ombudsman has sided with the Bank in 49% of recent cases. So I wouldn't lose any sleep over this unless you feel very strongly that your complaint was wrongly rejected by the Bank.Donttalkback wrote: »So I cant reclaim it at all now?
You do still have the option of going to court if you wish….0
