Coventry 6.40% 60+ account: open? Or shut?

There must, presumably, be some point in the Coventry Building Society advertising its new 60+ instant access Internet savings account, and setting up several pages on its website for online application.

There must, presumably, be some point in the Coventry Building Society asking prospective customers to devote their time to reading T&Cs, declarations, Gawd knows what else, plus filling in the online application form involving requests for information on everything from National Insurance number to personal bank account details.

And there must, presumably, be some point in the Coventry Building Society announcing, at the very end of that lengthy process, that the final page of the application form cannot be processed, and to please telephone a CBS representative for news of the Society's products and services.

Offhand though, I can't think of what that point might be.

Why is is that every -- every -- time a new player in the online high interest savings account field appears, they make a complete spherical objects of applications??????????????????

And if Coventry Building Society's 6.40% savings account is now closed. . . why waste everyone's time by declining to admit it?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

It's still being marketed (see here) Are you saying they have told you that it is now closed to new applications?

    Um, no.

What I'm saying is, the following appears on Coventry's website:

"As part of our ongoing commitment to give great service to our older customers, we've introduced a new account called Sixty-Plus eSave."

The following does not appear (but should):

"Also as part of our ongoing commitment, we'd like you all to waste your time answering lots of questions, filling in lots of forms, reading lots of bumf and generally !!!!!!ing yourselves about after which we'll put up a page saying 'temporarily unavailable, please ring an 0845 number now'."

    . . . . . . . . .

They might be overwhelmed due to the fact that they originally marketed it without stressing (I thought without even mentioning, but may it may just have been in small print) the fact that's it's actually only a 12-month fixed rate and thus not quite so good as it seemed initially......
  • I sympathise, the same thing happened to me at the end of the prolonged application process, so didn't take it further.
My daughter experienced the same when trying to apply for their 6.61% term bond, again she didn't go any further!
I did, however successfully open a bond myself online without any problem. In fact I must congratulate Coventry BS on the speed at which it was set up - less than a week and that included sending them identity/address proof documentaion. So they can't be THAT overwhelemed?

olage: spurred on by that, I'm off to have another go at Coventry!
  • If only setting up an account was the only problem. I've just tried to make a transfer to my new Coventry account but the account I'm transferring from will only allow an 8 digit account number whereas my Coventry account has 9 digits. Presumably it's too difficult for all the banks and building societies to have a common system.

Omit the first digit in the 9 digit number account.

That does not sound right. Building society account numbers can either be 'standard' eight digit account numbers - accompanied by a sort code OR non standard numbers 9 digits, characters, what have you. I'd suggest that you need you find the collection account at Coventry (which will be eight digits plus a sort code) - and add the account number they have given you (ALL 9 digits) as a 'reference'

In fact I have just checked with my First Direct account which has a handy facility and lists the sort code and account number For Coventry as:

    40 18 17 51172859

    Sort Code: 40-63-01
Account number: Please quote the last eight digits of your account number
  • As the 'thanks' tab doesn't seem to working, thanks all for putting me straight.
