Best time to book for deals?

Hi
My family (2 adults, 3 kids) are thinking of booking our first abroad holiday next October to Italy. We haven't done a non-Uk holiday since pre-children so wondered when is best to book and any recommendations of good sites to try. We're completely out of touch with booking holidays now. Should I look for deals now or try to do it nearer the time?
We'll most likely be looking to go self catering but not if we can get an amazing deal.

It's never too soon to start looking for a holiday. I often search many months in advance. Look everywhere online as everyone has their deals. Enjoy!0
