Replacing xenon bulbs with regular headlamps?

  • The problem is that the only real way to diagnose this type of light is to swap the bulbs with known working ones and see what happens.

If you've got 1 blown light and 1 properly working one - then you can swap the bulbs from side to side, and see what happens.

If you've got 2 malfunctioning lights, then the easiest thing is to replace both bulbs and see what happens. In general, the ballasts last a lot longer than the bulbs.

It might be worth just buying some bulbs (e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301147979214) and getting them fitted, and hope that they work.

If it's a ballast problem, then you can decide what to do at that point.

I have a feeling it's not going to be as easy as we hoped. I think we'll have to speak to the mechanic again and find out if he knows exactly what needs replacing. Hopefully it's not the whole unit. The car is the type where the wheel has to come off to access the lights and we'll have to pay for the mechanic to do it all. Maybe we should take it to a Renault garage to find out what's wrong. We're using a local mechanic and I'm not sure if that's best with electrical stuff. Though, I dread to think what Renault would charge.

As others have said, the HIDs are a ballast and bulb, you (or someone) can easily eliminate if the ballast or bulb requires replacement, working bulb into the none working unit, if the bulb illuminates then it's the ballast (or even the wiring), ballasts can be had for £55 .
