Joiner - Level Floor and Box Pipework

Hi,
I've found a joiner online who has already fitted my kitchen and has quoted me for further works. As a first time buyer and being in my mid-20s I'm a bit clueless and don't want to be taken for a mug. The only thing is he's really reliable and other workmen I've had have messed me about (no communication etc). I don't want to lose him but I don't want to be ripped off either:
Bathroom - repair and level floor ready for plywood covering ready for tiling, laying plywood covering. Form pipe boxes around waste pipes.
Materials - plywood floor covering, plywood for pipe boxes, battens for securing to wall, nails and screws.
Labour: 1-2 days to complete work (he currently works in the house evenings)
Total cost: £550.

How bigs the room makes a difference (why do all so many carpenters insist on being joiners, cabinet makers) if its only taking a day even two labour no more than 150- 175 a day London prices less as you head out to the sticks materials couldn't say don't know quantities etc
But there laying a floor covering not repairing a 15th century writing desk with walnut inlay0 -

The term "Joiner" traditionally meant someone who made Joinery but in certain areas of the country where someone is called a "Joiner" they will be a carpenter (someone who fits the things a Joiner makes). It probably goes back to the days where the village carpenter would make windows, doors, cupboards etc and also fit them .
There are different types of Carpenter ranging from 1st fix Carpenter (pitches the roof, stud walls, door linings etc) to 2nd fix carpenter (does all the carpentry jobs after plastering ,ie hangs the doors, fits skirting boards, architraves, fits the kitchen etc) and there are also shuttering carpenters who make ply formers(boxes in ply) etc for for groundworkers to pour the concrete into the footings etc.
Cabinet maker is just that, makes cupboards, cabinets and more furniture orientated.
I do a bit of work in SE London (Making /fitting Joinery) and rates are more like £200-250 a day for a qualified tradesman.0 -

Work alot in London some have been prestigious and historic building not meet a "Carpenter" on any of those ( some were very good ) but only on £45k PA but at £250 /65k PA you’d be bucking the average achieved in the city all power to you if you can get it?0 -

I'm regularly asked by clients to work in London , I don't mind supply only but as I really dislike London I rarely work up there. The reason I get asked regularly is quite simple, Its the quality of the workmanship and price. There are some companies in London doing good quality work but they are too expensive so the rates I post are pretty accurate for quality workmanship imo.
Just to add, I know plenty of Carpenters,Plumbers, electricians etc who travel to London daily purely because they can earn far more than they can here. No point travelling 130 miles a day if your only going to earn an extra £50 a day.
Here in the South East you don't hear anyone calling themselves a "Joiner" unless he makes Joinery, further North you go many "carpenters" call themselves Joiners.0 -
