Sky television problem

I had sky installed on saturday, well he fitted a new digibox but left the existing cable and dish. Showed me how it worked with the av button
Later put the tv on and the 5 ordinary channels have sound but the picture is just a distorted image of whatever is on sky, so have turned the sky off and tv is working fine.
What sort of problem do you think it may be, any help would be great, have rung sky and been on hold for ages, eventually getting cut off.

it sounds like the default output for the digibox is interferring with your analogue tv you need to enter the engineers menu press services then press 4,0,1 then press select this will bring up the engineers menu press 4 then change the rf channel then save and exit this should do the trick
  • Not sure, but the stormy weather upsets my sky. I have to wait for the weather to pass. Sometimes I need to switch the sky box off but.... always wait a few minutes after switching the box on at the electric before using the remote. Don't know why but if I try to use the remote too quickly the picture cracks up:eek:

Also the way my son wired it all together when I have the video or dvd switched on it makes the picture distorted.

    Hope this helps.

  • I tried changing the Rf number all of them and it stayed the same, eventually got through to Sky who don't consider it a problem most people aren't bothered by their analogue tv was the reply, but whats the point of it I will only be able to record what I am watching
In my desperation I have fiddled with the cables and now can't remember where they went, could anybody give me an idiots guide to where the cables go between aerial, tv, sky, video and DVD player I would be very grateful I am now regretting getting the six months package.

The Sky installer should have checked everything before leaving to make sure all was working OK, get Sky to come out again at no charge, your analogue TV should work perfectly.

Read this through and decide if you can follow the instructions before pulling any more connections off your equipment.

It's not hard to rewire to, just be methodical. I have to make some assumptions though and will assume that your video and DVD and sky all connect via Scart sockets, although if not it won't make that much difference.

    1. Disconnect all the cables and lay them out neatly beside you obviously the TV aerial and sky aerial will not disconnect from your wall!

    2. Fasten the Sky aerial to the sky box, you'll recognise this as it has a small threaded connector (known as an F Type if your interested), be careful not to cross thread it.

    3. Connect the incoming TV aerial wire to your VCR, it should only fit one of the TV aerial connectors which will be marked 'aerial in' or similar.

    4. Using one of the interconnecting cables you removed, connect the other aerial connector on your video to the TV.

    5. connect a SCART connector between your Sky box and TV.

    6. Connect a SCART connector between your DVD player and TV

    7. Connect a SCART connector between your VCR and TV.

You may have some leads left, but there should be no need to connect them to any on the equipment.
  • Sounds like rubbish scart lead to me - my sky box used to do this with my fairly decent panasonic tv.

Changed the scart lead for a decent one and it went away.

    worth giving it a go!

I assume that the OP has had just a basic Sky Digibox installed? i.e. not Sky+ or SkyHD. In which case the above configuration will only allow the analogue TV channels to be recorded on the VCR. Also you have 3 Scart connections to the TV. Unless the OP is very lucky it's likely that the maximum scarts on the TV will be 2.

There are a couple of ways to resolve this. But it really depends upon how the OP wants to set it up and what the OP wants to record. If Sky channels are to be recorded then a connection between the digibox and VCR will be required. This could be by either the RF or Scart connectors. On a basic Digibox there should be an RF in and 2 RF out connections.

I would suggest that you connect as follows

    1. Aerial (from roof) lead to RF in on Sky Digibox.

    2. Sky cable (usually black and stiff) from dish with the F (screw) connector to back of Sky Digibox. Ensure that the copper centre core is in the centre of the connector on the Digibox and that it is all tightened up to a good finger tight.

    3. Coaxial cable from RF1 on back of Digibox to RF in on VCR.

    4. Coaxial cable from VCR RF out to the TV aerial in socket. Or, if there are enough spare Scart sockets on the TV, you can also use a Scart lead as well. If you do not connect to the aerial socket from either the VCR or Sky Digibox depending upon how you set up the system you will not get any of the analogue channels on your TV. .

    5. Scart between DVD and TV

    6. Scart between Digibox and TV

You should then be able to get the Sky picture through either AV1 or AV2 on your TV depending upon which scart socket it’s connected to. The DVD player will play through the other AV that is left.

Your VCR will play through the normal channel that it has always used. Often 0 (zero) is used for this. Unless of course you used a scart before, in which case you will need to tune a channel in to the VCR.

To record the Sky channels on the VCR you will need to tune the VCR to the Sky box. And remember you will only be able to record the same channel from the Sky box that you are watching. The VCR has not got a digital tuner so you cannot record one Sky channel whilst watching another. You would need a Sky+ box or two Digiboxes and a dual LNB to do that.

I would have suggested that you would probably have been better off getting Sky+ and using that to record. And just use your VCR to carry on as before, if you really wanted, recording analogue. But with the Sky+ box the VCR would really have become redundant except for playing back old tapes.

    I think I've remembered everything?

Good luck and if you get stuck post again.
